Chaffee County Times - Young Guns take third at State
Earlier this month, Buena Vista High School’s Young Guns went to Colorado Springs to compete in the clay target shooting league state finals and came away with three all-state finishers.
Dawson Martinez finished first in the 3A state standings and Ty Munchoff and Trace Steed tied for second.
Young Guns coach Jake Farber said that the competition in the Springs had a “David and Goliath atmosphere” as the 15-member Buena Vista team took on much larger teams from Brighton, Fruita, Monument and Sterling. The Young Guns finished third as a team with a total target count of 467, just seven targets less than the competition’s winner, Fruita Monument.
Steed came in second with a score of 98 out of 100, followed by Wayne Nagel with 94.
Martinez was BV’s third-highest scorer at the finals with 93, finishing fourth overall in league standings with a season average of 24.4.
In the three categories of Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity, representing Buena Vista in the
novice class was Gavin Pettus with a score of 36 out of 100. Junior Varsity had male and
female competitors Taya Martinez with a score of 70 out of 100 and Ryan Sandmier with a score of 87 out of 100. Buena Vista’s Varsity contestants were Madalyn Carlson with a score of 72 out of 100 and the second-place overall state champion of the Colorado State finals was Trace Steed with a score of 98 out of 100.
